got an update this evening for the graphic's card. This update is available since May for windows 7, 8 & 8.1. Only updated this over an hour ago but I havn't had a crash yet. Given that it is a windows error there maybe some connection. The update definitely changed the resolutions settings. working so far (fingers etc. crossed)
