Sims 4 Performance and Crashing (Crash on Travel, Slow Load Time)
Hi there, I have been experiencing various issues with Sims 4 in the last few months, some of which have almost cost me my save files due to possible corruption; thankfully, I was able to revert back...
After removing all of the folders from the Documents area, the game did begin to function much faster, it seems when I reloaded my Save file however, that the game began to experience issues once again, likely due to the amount of activity I have done with my save.
This seems to happen regardless of the lot that I choose to use.
I do not seem to have a lot of custom content in my Sims 4 game, I do have a lot of individual lots...but is that not part of the game's design?
If you have tried all combinations and your save is always the source of the issue, then you should see what you can do to try and alleviate the problem:
- Can you empty your inventory to see if it helps with performance?
- Can you give us a DXDiag so we can see what kind of pc specs you have?
To gather a DXDIAG on your computer, please follow the steps below:
1. Press and hold the Windows key and the letter R on your keyboard 2. You will see a Run box in the lower-left corner of your screen 3. Type dxdiag in the text field 4. Click OK 5. If your computer has a 64-bit version of Windows, click the button Run 64-bit DXDIAG (see screenshot below) 6. If your computer has a 32-bit version of Windows, that button will not be available
64-bit Users will notice the "Run 64-bit DxDiag" button in the bottom-left next to "Help" and should click it once it becomes available. 32-bit Users will not have this as a visible option.
Once you have an open DXDIAG report, there are several pieces of information that are especially helpful in pinpointing the cause of game performance issues:
The main page of the DXIDAG is the System tab. On the System tab, make a note of what is written next to Operating System, Processor, and Memory. Those three pieces of information are the key components of the System tab.
Next, click on the Display tab. On the Display tab (seen in the screenshot below) please note the information written next to the word Name. Finally, on the right-hand side of the Display tab is a Drivers heading. Please note what is written next to the word Date.
If you have any trouble reading the DXDIAG file yourself, you can save all the DXDIAG info as a text file and send it to an EA advisor for more assistance.
7. Click the Save All Information button, found on the bottom of the DXDIAG report 8. Save this text file to your Desktop if possible, then go to hastebin.com and copy the contents of the file.
9. Give us the link of the paste in a reply to this thread. 🙂
Apologies, I missed your DXDiag in your previous post. You could always update your drivers for a start, knowing that there are drivers from July for your 750Ti:
I don't expect it to have any dramatic change however, but you never know. Your config is already ludicrously strong in most respects (for instance your preposterous amount of RAM). Let us know if this helps. 🙂
Understood, I will give this a try and let you know what I find with the driver update:
I did find something in the meantime that might prove insightful:
- I took the advice to remove items from my Sim's inventory, this seemed to help significantly on some of the lots, it reduced my normally 3.2 GB of RAM usage to 2.2 RAM usage, however even without adding more to my inventory, the RAM usage seems to progressively go up during gameplay. After about 2 hours of gameplay it was back up to 3.1 GB.
- I started a whole new lot, then went back to one of the lots that was having problems, this seemed to clear out some RAM usage for the previously played lot, regardless of items in the inventory. (Lot with 2.9 GB RAM usage went down to 2.6 GB RAM.)
Things I will try and do next:
- Move a family to a new lot and rebuild, see if this reduces RAM usage for that family.
- See if I can pinpoint any specific items in my Sims inventory that might be causing large RAM usage. (Possibly damaged bills from the previous issue that was resolved with mailboxes?)
- Roll back the same families via a previous save and see if similar issues are occurring. (I have one from a month ago, same lot and sims, might prove useful.)
Thanks for catching the driver update, I'll give that a whirl and see if it improves anything.
I have the same issue. Minor glitches and bugs aside, my game crashes so frequently when playing my main save that it has been rendered unplayable.
Like others, "The Sims 4 has stopped working" error messages and resulting crashes are triggered by any attempt to save (the game, a lot to my library, etc.), when my Sims attempt to travel, and/or when simply trying to load a household. I can sometimes get in an play for a bit, but none of my Sims can travel. I do not play with mods or cc, unless I have unknowingly downloaded either from the gallery. The most obvious head-scratcher is my save inexplicably being 75K+ KB large.
I've scoured the main TS4 forums and these EA Answers HQ forum and have attempted the following without resolution:
repairing in Origin and assuring I wasn't missing a patch/update.
confirming available memory (see attached DxDiag).
disabling Origin in-game.
playing offline.
emptying my Sims 4 cache.
I tried rolling back to an earlier save but either there isn't one or I just can't figure out how to do it. I'm thinking I've only ever used this one save.
Someone suggested that I save all of my Sims and their lots to my library, launch anew, and dropping them all back in. I could do that (if I can save them without a crash) but I play about 20+ families that are (almost) all related to each other. If this fix means they lose all of their relationships, I'll have towns full of "relative-strangers" who may want to woohoo with each other and that's creepy... I also have not uninstalled/reinstalled my game or any packs, which has been suggested, for fear I would lose everything?
The problem started sometime after I downloaded/installed Spooky Stuff. I'm not saying Spooky Stuff is to blame, simply offering a date reference. Also, SS tried to install twice - or maybe it did, I don't know how to find out. I would assume a duplicate attempt would replace the original and not add double files. Around the same time frame while in-game, I also suffered a PC crash that was triggered by a Windows 10 update. May or may not be related, but felt it worth mentioning.
I have been able to start a brand new game/save that does not crash, so the error is somewhere in that particular game/save.
A link to a .zip copy of the save, a DxDiag, and one of several recent crash reports are in the spoiler below. If you need/want anything else, please let me know.
The issue unfortunately is now pretty much in EA's ball court now, a majority of these performance issues are as a result of the program not utilizing memory correctly, or due to it only being a 32-bit program, which results in the OS crashing it.
I wish there was more steps we could do here outside of the game itself, but we've exhausted all our options.
Thank you for the reply. It's just frustrating that it happens. I've lost an entire year's worth of game play, achievements, etc. I love the game, but these recurrent and unresolved issues are starting to make me love it a little less. It's very unfortunate.
