Sims cannot eat from fridge

Ever since the latest update for The Sims and Origin I have been unable to grab food from any fridge with any family. I've tried restarting the game, removing the fridge and giving them a new one. The money for the food gets removed but no food is given in replacement. My sims need food to live. I've already had one family starve to death because they couldn't get food. What do I do to fix this? Do i need to wait for another update?
