The Sims 4 will not launch in the EA App

Since the most recent update (June 2024), my game will not launch. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the EA app, cleared the cache, repaired the game, and run the EA app as an administrator and nothing works. The game won't launch with or without mods.

When I launch, nothing happens. When I attempt to relaunch the game the EA app gives me a message that the game is already running, which it isn't! When I attempt to make an error report in the app, that can't be done either!

  • @jaealnisa @BreezyFaith @jdoggamer1234  Please restart your computer, then move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop.  If it copies instead of moving, or you get an error when trying to move it, stop here and let me know.

Otherwise, when you launch the game, if it launches, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you moved but temporarily not read by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just let me know whether you can get far enough to start a new save and play in live mode for a bit.

If that doesn't help, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

Please also let me know whether you get the same error message or a different one when testing with the clean user folder.

  • Hi there

did you manage to fix this? I have been trying for months now, have tried everythi g suggested online. Removed all mods and cc and the game still will not launch. I am beyond frustrated and very sad. I have spent so much money on packs etc and I can’t play. It is devastating

@Jlatheron  As a test, please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and when you launch the game, if it launches, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you moved but temporarily not read by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just let me know whether you can get far enough to start a new save and play in live mode for a bit.

If that doesn't help, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

If you get an error message when trying to play, please post a screenshot of that as well.

  • I have found another possible way to fix this issue. I've had it refuse to launch several times, and each time I got it to work with a different solution found on the internet, but then the next time, that solution wouldn't work.

But recently I had it happen again, and after failing at everything else, I discovered a new trick that got it to work. I went to my steam library for Sims 4, disconnected all the paid DLCs that I bought, and then started the game. It said my previous save had a problem and asked if I wanted to use a backup instead, and I said yes, but it warned me not to play without the DLCs, so I exited the game, reapplied all the paid DLCs, and it opened back up and started working.

So what I believe happened was that by disconnecting my DLCs, it caused the game to launch in a novel way- as just the base game, and once launched, I resolved the issue with the save, and then could reapply the DLCs and play on.

This worked well for me, except when the file was out of the doc folder. when I loaded up the game like that I lost all my saves and it made me redownload all of my packs. how can I make a permanent solution without losing my saves? thank you so much

  • @pdgep2  If you installed Sims 4 itself into Documents, please uninstall it again and reinstall it elsewhere.  Almost anywhere is fine, including the default C:\Program Files\EA Games.  Having the game in Documents can cause all kinds of problems.

If you've put your saves back, remove them first, along with the Tray folder and anything else you don't want to lose.

More generally, the point of the clean folder is to see whether the game works with none of your existing content: saves, mods, etc.  This doesn't mean permanently deleting your saves, just testing without them before slowly adding content back.  Saves generally don't stop the game from loading anyway, so there's no reason to delete them outright.

Hi @puzzlezaddict, i followed the steps as you said but after I try to launch the game again it didn't work even after it created the new folder in Documents.

Any other things I can do?

    Thanks!

  • This is what the EA says after it doesn't launch.

@OmarMtz9  Please restart your computer, and run the EA App as an admin: right-click the desktop shortcut and select "Run as administrator."  If you don't have a desktop shortcut, you can find the EADesktop.exe here:

    C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\EA Desktop\EA Desktop

Make sure the App is fully loaded before trying to launch Sims 4.  And let me know if you happen to launch it through Steam or Epic.

If you still can't play, please run a dxdiag and attach it to your reply.

@puzzlezaddict Sorry for the delay, I was out. I try the steps but didn't work, here is the dxdiag.

I uninstalled everything and installed it back. It opened, and I added by saving flies again. I played for a moment and later exited the game and turned off the device. But later, it didn't open again.

@OmarMtz9  Your dxdiag is missing some information, not your fault, just a glitch or a sign of a system issue.  So please run a couple of basic checks of your Windows system files:

    • Hit Windows key-X
    • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
    • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes, and enter
    • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
    • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key-X again
    • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator)”
    • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes, and enter
    • Post the message you receive here

Restart your computer, hit Windows key-i, select Update & Security, and click the box to check for updates.  If any install, restart again afterwards.

Please try again to play, then run a new dxdiag and attach it to your reply.  Please also look for new errors in the Reliability Monitor.  Hit Windows key-R and enter "perfmon /rel" without quotes, and you'll see a chart of errors and updates with a column for each day.  Today is on the right.

Look for an error that happened at exactly the time of your most recent attempt to launch Sims 4, specifically after running DISM and sfc.  If you find one, double-click it to see more details, then copy that info and paste it into a reply here.  If you don't see a new error, check back in an hour or so—the Reliability Monitor doesn't always update right away.
