Update Popup Freezes Up Screen When Trying to Exit Popup

The current update popup, when I try to exit it the popup by clicking the red X, my desk top freezes, and can not get out of the game nor into my computer, I have to do a hard system reboot to get out of it.  How do I stop the update popup from reappearing?  Thank you.

  • @FitoBoy13  Does this happen if you play in windowed mode?  You can force the game to launch in windowed mode through Origin: open your game library, right-click on the Sims 4 icon, select Game Properties > Advanced Launch Options, enter -w in the command line box, and save the change.

If this doesn't help, please restart your computer before playing and don't open anything other than Origin and Sims 4.  If you have any apps set to start with Windows, close them first.

While playing in windowed mode, you should be able to right-click on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, bring up the Task Manager, and kill the game from there if necessary.  Otherwise, click crtl-alt-delete and choose to sign out, which will close all running programs and boot you back to the Windows sign-in screen.

  • I'm having the same issue. And I don't have any UI mods installed so I don't think that's the problem.

I've had this happen before with previous announcement pop-ups, but those times I was able to remove my mods folder, reload the game, close out of the pop-up, put my mods back in, and play as normal since the pop-up didn't come back again. I think part of what's going on is that, because of this "stalker" character they're messing around with right now, the pop-up reappears every time you open the game. I have a feeling it may just be a matter of waiting a few days until this announcement period is over...

Would still love to hear about any other solutions though.

@puzzlezaddict Thank you, but it still freeze, but now it just freezes for 20-30 seconds, and then it pops off and I can play the game. Thank u for your help - I appreciate it.

Not necessarily...I have to pull up the task manager and manually end task on that screen in order to get past the pop-up.

@FitoBoy13  If you want to troubleshoot further, try disabling the Origin in-game overlay.  The setting is under Application Settings > Origin in-game.

If that doesn't help, try playing in a clean boot:

    https://www.windowscentral.com/how-clean-boot-windows-10

When you reboot, go through the Task Manager's background processes list shutting down anything that doesn't absolutely need to be running.  If you accidentally kill the wrong process and it doesn't restart on its own, just reboot your computer.

@puzzlezaddict Thank u - I will keep this in mind (about the clean boot) actually I can put up with the 20-30 second freeze, but if it gets too bad, I'll do the above option u gave me. Thanks for your reply.
