Will Sims 4 age naturally without needing cake?

Apologies if this has been asked already but I can't find it anywhere!

Will Sims ever age up automatically or do you need to have them interact with a cake to age them every time?

So far I've been quite enjoying the baking a cake action so maybe haven't left it enough days, if you have to use the cake EVERY TIME that's quite annoying...
