I watched the reveal video for Project Rene. I didn't see any reason for Simmers to move on from TS4 (nor older games) to get onboard with TS5/Rene.
1. Everyone oohing over lighting, read the statement on the scene picture...like in all trailers/videos they do, may not be in the game. I always forget their exact quote warning not actual game footage stuff as stated on the video first scene.
2. They said it would look good on pc and the phone... So, it's going to have a lot of mobile features if lighting matters on a phone.
3. They talked about wanting to figure out what is the sweet spot for not too much emotional information on the screen (moodlets and text popups and buffs?) this time. Well, that's sort of odd because all they have to do is remember or play TS2 to figure out why it's beloved when it comes to understanding exactly what the Sims are talking about due to their expressions and speech bubble and 'emotional behaviors'. It's like they are trying to reinvent the wheel. It's just really odd they want to figure this out...without so many popups, text and moodlets and or buff stuff going on. :( Have they forgotten TS2 exists? It didn't have moodlets, avatar mood colors, or buffs and or text popups telling us what our Sim was thinking or feeling and or their 'mood'. Odd indeed.
4. They talked about wanting to figure out how to animate the Sim's movements and reactions etc. etc. That's odd, too. Nothing so far that would convince anyone to drop TS4 (or older games). They have been animating this franchise for more than twenty years. Some great animations in all of them to do with the Sim's stance, movements, reactions, etc. etc. It's like they want to reinvent the wheel.
5. Trying to figure out how to lighten hair in stands, colors etc. What? Did they forget they have been doing this for twenty years?
It's almost like they have never built The Sims...and I guess some of them haven't, but good gracious, I came away scratching my head, wondering why they are trying to reinvent the wheel and totally forgetting they have already made some terrific games, that we all still love and this one isn't impressive enough (yet) to get anyone excited about a new title. Sad.
It's almost like they don't remember the other three earlier games before TS4's moodlet/buff/avatar mood colors.
6. Apartments with a store beneath it, had a mod for that way back in TS2. They look at mods and always have...it's really late in the stage of The Sims to just now getting around to that. Multipurpose lots are possible in TS1, TS2. It's not new.
But it would be if they didn't have those and only TS3 and TS4.
A new generation of phone players may love this game but so far I saw nothing that they haven't already done and credit where it is due, the other games are great in their own ways, but this time it's like Maxis has memory problems.
ETA: I came away thinking they had three selling points and none of it was that impressive. Lighting was the lead topic, ok, yes, it's important but not as much as the Sim. 2nd was moods of the Sim....forgot all about TS2 there, like it never existed. Third, coloring hair...they have been doing that since TS2, with highlights, movement etc. Wait, Fourth, animation movements, stances etc.....even TS4 has some impressive almost human movements even more so than TS2, so yeah....nothing to see here. (Yet). One would think with what all we have seen with the other two upcoming games on the market next year or so, Maxis would have put out the best to take the show. Like drop the mic but they didn't. :o
