I won't mind if they offer basegame free, it's going to be difficult anyway to go from a fully fledged game to just basegame yet again and I always wait for a couple of EPs or so before I move fully to the new game. I will see what they offer in terms of EPs, that is if there will be EPs, they may just do like for Freeplay and do free updates and sell small furniture and clothing sets.
Obviously making the game free would make it easier to test out, even for those who already bought LBY or Paralives if it releases on time. The thing that has most of us worried about it is: How then are they going to make their money. We all know EA is greedy for money. Yes, eventually they can make money by releasing expansion packs, but are they going to stage it so they have an expansion pack ready to buy on its release? How stripped down will the Base game be? and what else will they be charging us for? "Free to Enter" sounds suspicious. Will they have an in-game store that you can't turn off which shows paid content you can buy for your furniture or sims clothing? In Sims 3 I hated the Sims store and turned it off in my game's options, but will an even more money hungry EA allow that again?
I would also be worried if you had to put a credit card into the game just to play, even with it "Free," because then it would only take a single miss-click and you'd be charged for those fancy items in the store window.
I played with Sims 2&3 for years hoping to teach EA a lesson. That selling a stripped down version of the game is not an "upgrade" and not worth my money. And it was apparently for naught, because they continue to do the same things and have plenty of simmers ready to throw them their money for the packs and kits. Have they learned anything from the Sims 4 years, probably. They learned that all they need is an addicted little fan-base and they can sell them anything.
I'm sorry for being so negative. It's just how I've been feeling. Good news is, EA will soon have competition. Fueled probably by some of my own money, if they get good reviews when they release. EA might not make as much money from their latest scheme.
