I don't recall if anything healed our sims. I just remember the uproar and the patch that fixed it. :)
I remember being too afraid to ever get the hamster.
About half of my sims have them. It's safe now.
I was curious enough to look it up. It was actually a guinea pig, and you would catch Guinea Pig Disease. You could purchase the Forgotten Guinea Pig Painting to cure it. There was a glitch that made it so if an infected Sim died and was resurrected, they would still have the disease and just die again.
