Shortly after The Sims came out in 2000, my son played it at a friend's house. We looked at it in a store and decided it would be something we could buy for the kids (well, not the baby, but my son and his precocious little sister). We only had the one computer at that time — mine, in my office — so I watched them play... and was promptly hooked. (I am told by my husband that I was already a pro at "stealing" other people's games and making them mine. He gets the console games to himself, though, as using the controller often makes me dizzy.) Anyway, that's how I came to be playing within a couple months of the game coming out.
The Sims is notable in our household for The Day My Daughter Killed Me (By Accident). She had made our family (except the baby was a child), and I died in a horrifying Model Rocket accident in the backyard. I was not allowed to make myself from that point on, ever.
