I got a new PC and went looking in Game for something to play on it and found The Sims being exhibited on the shelves as just out. I haven't looked back since. I'd be a lot richer if I hadn't bought everything that came out after, plus buying an X box to play Bustin' out and others as well. I still think I was happiest playing the first game and finding new objects, new download sites and the enthusiasm of first players too, on the internet with Dial-up.
I've still got the original Xbox too. :)
Those were golden years! There was just so much of everything imaginable! Going to the software store was a regular thing because we knew there would be some new Sims something or other. Somebody somewhere was always making something new, the gaming magazines (real ones!) were loaded with Sims articles of all sorts, and there was an overall feeling of excitement, that we were all participating together in a grand new adventure, pioneers going into a new world.
I don't think it was so much of a children's game at that time as so many older players bought it and designed for it. I remember a one square elevator and 'The Seven deadly sins' site with dungeon builds and several more that I scoured for the free items beautifully made. I also remember the first yellow pee! We were all trying to improve the game by eradicating the errors with Maxis providing tools too. There weren't so many complaints just gratitude by most for Will Wright's inspired game and its diversity. Many friends met through the Newsgroups at the time.
