Hi, I have been playing Sims 2 on an old windows but since it broke I took out the hard drive and have it connected by usb now. I had everything legally installed from CDs. I connected the hard drive to my laptop (also windows) but when I insert the CD the system tells me to install the game from the beginning.
Is there a way to open the already installed game from external disc? How should I do it? Also I would like to restore the "families" I created on the previous computer.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

Sorry for the late reply, and welcome to Answers HQ!
When installing a game, some entries are created in Window's registry. You can think of it as a database of the programs installed in the computer, and some other useful information Windows needs to run any program. For this reason, it's not enough to connect your hard drive for the game to be able to run in your new computer.
You will need to install your games again in your laptop, but don't worry, if you have all your files from your old computer, we can keep your families:
- Install your games in your laptop.
- Open the game once. You won't see any of your families.
- Close the game when you reach the main menu.
- In your old hard drive, go to Documents \ EA Games. Copy The Sims 2 folder.
- In your laptop, go to Documents \ EA Games. Paste there The Sims 2 folder you have copied in step 4. If your computer asks, tell it to overwrite the duplicated files.
It's very important you make sure you are copying the files from the old hard drive to your laptop. If not, you could be deleting your families!
