Sims 3 started around 2006 and ended up being a 2009 launch.
Sims 4 started around 2010 and ended up with a 2014 launch (note the major pivot in 2013 from multiplayer to a singleplayer game engine, which likely extended the development time).
Sims 5 started around 2017
Actually, nope it just started much more recently-that's why they so early on in devlopment
They had to choose the engine first.
We saw a prototype which means they already created some content, dev tools and the core of the game (beta UI, features, ...).
Don't forget the development is for mobile devices, console and computer.
Previously The Sims games were developed for computer only.

Maybe not 2017 but SimGuruGrant left TS4 team for an unknown project in 2019 as Senior Producer, now he become Game Director on Project Rene.

If Grant is the Senior Producer on project Renee then it's going to be more of TS3 so I don't have high expectations from it. They've already brought back the colour wheel which, while it was fun to use, caused lots of performance issues in TS3 and textures that loaded and unloaded and made the game unplayable. I hope this workshop thing they showed during the summit is some external software much like Bodyshop was for TS2 and not an in-game thing.
