I tried following your steps, and when I talked to someone, they said it wasn't possible to register Sims 2, and hung up on me (I was mid sentence when I heard a click and I saw the call had ended).

EDIT: I spent another hour trying to get a hold of customer support, and when I was put in touch with a CSR, this guy was just awesome. He quickly helped get my copy of Sims 2 registered for my account, and then the same for my wife's copy for her account (We both have been long time sims fans, and so good amount of duplication so we both can play).
