SIMS 2 Best of Business - Unable to authenticate original disc within time limit

I have been messing around with my PC for hours now and really could use some help.  I installed SIM's 2 and then the Best of Business addition.  The Disc was bought used from a store so it has some very minor wear on it but it installed fine.  The downside is that I had to use an external drive to install it.  The disc won't start the game using the onboard DVD drive.  I get the error "Unable to authenticate original disc within time limit" when starting.  It will however start using the external drive.  Obviously I don't want to have to carry around the laptop and this drive so I tried creating an iso file and launching from that, no go.  it knows it's a copy.   I tried burning a new disc but no go there either.   So what should I do?

Should I just take the game back?  This is the only game my on board DVD drive is doing this with.
