Sims 2 Sims ageing too quickly

My teenage sims will age into adulthood then only have one day of being an adult before they age into an elder, where they then die after a day.

I have noticed their wants and aspiration meter doesn’t shift with the age change. 

I have tried aging cheats such as turning it on and off, I have tried letting them just age as per the game rather than birthday cakes or selecting them to age and nothing stops it. 

it doesn’t happen to every sim but it is happening increasingly often, and there are no familial patterns that I can see to who can and can’t age. In a family it’ll happen to a sibling but not the other. I can’t seem to able to reverse it or prevent it.
