Same laptop, same problem. Really frustrated
My laptop is a Dell XPS L702x, not L720x. I made a mistake earlier. 😕mileyembarrassed:
I wonder if this is a problem with Dell computers. I used to own a Dell Dimension E520 from 2007, and a few years ago I tried to get The Sims 2 to work on it from physical CD copy (my OS was Windows 7), and I had the same problem. Back then I assumed it was due to lack of compatability.
Now I'm running the game on still relatively youthful laptop (well, about 2 and half years old anyway ... 😕mileytongue🙂 and the problem strikes again. Frustrating. Add to that the fact the problem doesn't seem to be too common, so there isn't much help online.
Anyway, I'm going to try to compromise. Whenever I need to enter text (to create a Sim, write out a neighbourhood story, enter a cheat, etc.) I'll just minimise the game, type the text in a word processor, then copy it and paste it into the game.
Not very convenient, but I hope it works.

FaeLD, if you have a Dell XPS laptop like me you'll have to hack the 'Graphics Rules' file to get the game to run in 1080p, be able to switch on the anti-aliasing and to remove the black abyss beneath the sims themselves as they walk in their homes.
Without those tweaks the game runs only in 800 x 600 and the anti-aliasing setting will be turned off and greyed out so you won't be able to turn it on.- Anonymous11 years ago
Managed to fix the resolution one, but still can't seem to find the hex code necessary to fix the antialiasing bug. I don't seem to have the black square bug (yet).
Fixing the resolution does not seem to have fixed my typing bug though.
Edit: Fixed the AA one aswell, just needed to set my nvidia card as the default processor, not the integrated.
