Sims 2 won't work on Windows 8 or Windows Vista, help?

SOOO. I got a new laptop with Windows 8 and I previously had Windows 7 Starter.

I was able to get the Sims 2 (4 CD Set) on Windows 8 but then I couldn't get any of the expansion packs to download and I have 12. It kept telling me that I needed an update then the update would terminate and cancel the installation. 

So then I tried to download onto my mom's computer with Windows Vista. But everythime it would ask me to put the original disk in. What does that even mean?! I already had teh original in. I really need help and can not afford to buy a new operating system. Help!!
