Stuck at 800x600 Resolution on Windows 8

As the title says - I'm stuck on a 800x600 resolution with most of the graphics options shaded out. My PC is rather Overkill for Sims 2 - GTX 780oc 2500k etc - surely there is a fix to get it run at...

Same issue, Windows 7 GTX 660

At your own risk, you can try the steps suggested here. Just make sure to make a backup copy of the file you will be editing, as suggested.
