@Lucy_Henley Environment and upbringing certainly shape the personality of the descendants. The problem is that parents can unconsciously pass on their self-destructive or bully personality. Especially what they themselves are not aware of.
The victim may develop into a bully in his attempt to empower himself. Bullying is more a sign of a sick culture than it should fall back on the individual person. It takes something special to put yourself completely outside the influence you have had from your upbringing.
It's a rather exciting topic with a lot of substance in it. I can understand that you want to describe the topic in your story.
I totally agree with what you're saying about unsympathetic characters. I also think that almost all of my characters have a little bit of me in them.
I was just curious about how other authors handle characters in whom you cannot immediately recognize a part of yourself. My experience is that they become very flat or empty and thus they bore me. I always have to find some kind of connection or understanding of what it is that formed them.
