MonaSolstraaleWhat an unexpected and exciting question. 💖 I have never actually considered reading my Simlit out loud and I am also sure that they are not suitable. Too many images in relation to text. 😅
First, I would like to say that in my opinion an accent is charming and helps to give a voice character. My grandmother came from Amsterdam and I loved when she read stories in Danish to me.I would prefer to listen to a story that was told / read with enthusiasm rather than with varied voices. I have seen stories on YouTube that are read aloud by voices that I assume come from an artificial reading-aloud program and regardless of whether there are both male and female voices, it irritates me that they sound staccato without emphasis and life.
I think it will seem distracting if you try to change your voice to male and female voices. My recommendation is that you should think of yourself as a narrator and let the listener imagine the rest.I think you should try it if you feel like it. It often feels quite nerve-wracking before you step out onto uncertain ground. It feels so much bigger afterwards and often not nearly as dangerous as you think.
Ask yourself what is the worst that can happen. There probably won't be several hundred attending your first performance. You can start by sharing the link with a small group you trust.Do I want to listen to a Simlit instead of reading?
I have seen some stories on YouTube I have followed, but I love the Simlit genre for what it is. It also allows me to use google translate for the passages I don't understand.
This is really helpful thank you, and I agree I think being a narrator definitely takes the pressure off and helps me tell the story authentically.
EvilBnuuyIn your case: Interesting idea, go for it. In my case, absolutely not I would never do it for a million reasons!
However, I have an idea of (depending on pricing) getting a printed single 'proper book' copy of my story done as a sort of physical preservation. But that likely won't happen and I'll probably just make a PDF instead.
I get what you mean about accents! I never thought mine was anything special or nice but it's been commented on a few times so I guess there are parts outside of London that people like hearing the accent of? 😂 I love the idea of printing a book, Blurb is a good site for putting together your own book and printing it. I did that with a planner I was testing that I never ended up making bigger. I want to create a non-Sims related version of Evergreen one day and seeing if I could publish it.
Personally, I love listening to audio books because I love being read to. It's easier for me to get really absorbed in the story in a fully immersive way when I am listening rather than reading. But a lot depends on the way it's read. I have actually encountered readings of books I love that just fell very flat.
In your case, it sounds like specific readers, perhaps people you know, are requesting this audio format. I think that if it's something you want to do, go for it. You will improve your skill in it as you do it more. If you enjoy doing it, and they are happy that you are doing it for them, it would be 100% worth it. But if you don't want to, I don't think you should feel obligated. It's your story, and your time.
I think that's a big thing for me is wanting to make it interesting without the images, although I'm thinking about doing an audio on YouTube with the screenshots in a slide show in time with the text/audio. I agree, and appreciate what you're saying about feeling obligated. It's one of those projects that has no time limit I guess, could always do it later on if not now!
Thank you all so much for your thoughts it's really helped!
