[The Sims 2] Game crashes when building a 16th wall via a cheat

Greetings, Sims Community.

I have been working on a building that is based on a real building that has 13 floors in The Sims 2. But due to its realistic height at 199 ft, I was compelled at accurately recreating the building in the game, which also meant using the cheat sethighestallowedlevel. However, when I try to build the 16th floor, the game always crashes. I have seen people exceed the limit up to 20. Others have found a way to exceed the hard-coded wall limit some other way. Others have used a software that changes the heights of the walls. But I’m not really sure if I should proceed with the latter option of using a program due to worries that my build might be glitched out in parts where I do not want them to be stretched. I’m not sure how to proceed with my build unless I find the solution I’m the most comfortable with using without harming my original build with glitches or even corruptions.

Is there a way for me to be able to build the 16th floor and go beyond that level? I thought the game would allow you to build 255 floors alone with the cheat specifying the number as the capped limit, but at 16 it felt like a bamboozle. What should I do in this situation?

Best regards,

- ChrisinLiberty

  • @ChrisinLiberty , I'll admit I'm no building expert and very seldom do we get gameplay/build questions here. In regards to using mods/cheats/other programs, that is at your discretion and may render the build unplayable or corrupt your game.

If you would like my advice, I would modify your build to look like the building you are trying to recreate. Many builders modify the floor plans to conform to the game limitations no matter the version of the Sims they are playing. They quite often end up with a build that looks exactly like what they were trying to recreate without having to "break" the game to do it. Please remember that Sims 2 is an older game and trying to push beyond the limits of the game may break it or the build.

I think the original game only allowed for 5 floors in a build and the 5th floor was usually the roof. It's been awhile since I tried to build that many floors.

I can give it a try; limiting the floors needed for my building. And I know the game is 16 years old, but thought that with the passage of time and technology, it would improve better. Turns out I could’ve been wrong about the setheightallowedlevel being able to fully work in modern PCs. I’d try again building what I’m going for, perhaps. The reference is at 13 floors but it looks more than 13 floors high in-person, though.

I’m aware of the mods and hacks that can corrupt my game. I’ll keep them noted.

@ChrisinLibertyIs it possible that your game ran out of memory? Do you have 4GB Patch installed?

I’m not sure. I do have the 4GB patch installed but it didn’t solve the problem.

  • It’s on a separate hard drive when it comes to the game. I think I have 40.0 GB on my local disk and I believe around 128 GB on the hard drive my game is located.

I have recently shrunk the amount of floors on my build, hoping that when I reach the last floor my game won’t crash afterwards. I thin those are all the storage units I mentioned as of now. Other players have also gotten the crash regardless of the amount of storage in their drives.

@ChrisinLiberty , sounds like you have more than enough memory to play. But as I advised earlier, you may want to modify your design to "mimic" the look of the building to prevent crashes.

I would love to see pictures when you're done.
