The sims 2 launcher has stop stopped working

When I play the sims 2 Double Deluxe, it's said The sims 2 launcher has stopped working.  I have windows 7 64bit.

    While not a fix, I did find a workaround.  The accessing the internet in the launcher is causing the problem.  I disabled my network connection and ran the Launcher, no issue, the game started fine.  Then I enabled my network connection, have the internet again and the game still runs.  A pain when I want to play the game, but I can deal with it.  I've been playing Sims 2 for years and don't like the newer versions at all.

I am running Windows 8 and I am also having this problem. I found a way to work around it, although I wish EA would take responsibility here and just fix it for us.  When I realized that the "Play" button on the launcher always appears in the same place on the middle of my screen, I came up with an inelegant but effective solution.

This is what I do:

      1. Single click on the desktop icon

      2. Move my mouse pointer to the middle of the screen where the "Play" button will appear

      3. Press the "Enter" key on my keyboard to open the program

      4. Click the "Play" button with my mouse as soon as I see it appear

This starts the game before the launcher has time to load.  It is only the launcher that is having a problem.  I had to practice a few times but now I know where the mouse pointer should be and it's no big deal.
