[The Sims 2] SIMS 2 compatibility with windows 7

Hi,

I am trying to install the Sims 2 on to my windows 7 computer (64bit home premium). It states that the expansions are compatible but not the original game. How can I get the Sims 2 to install so I can play it? 

When I run the game it looks like it is going to install but then just brings up a box with a red X in it and then does not do anything.

If you could help that would be great
