The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection: Keeps Crashing on CAS menu (Windows 10)

Hi all,

I would not have created a new thread if I have not look for every possible solution in this forum, as well as in other places outside of it. However, I hope I can get this sorted out and play this game from my childhood.

About three years ago (I believe) I got this free code from EA for The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection. I redeemed it and I was able to play the game with no problem. My OS at the time was Windows 7. I stopped playing after some time and during that time I upgraded to Windows 10 and so recently I decided to play the game again. The game was installed and it runs perfectly up to the point where I either try to create a new family or select one from the neighborhood. I may add that sometimes the game takes too long to load. The game crashes and I get the message "The application has crashed and will now close". I have tried to open the game again and so far just one time have I been able to start creating a single Sim, but in process of selecting clothes or whatever, it crashes.

This is a list of methods I have tried to solve the issue (none of which have worked):

  • Set up compatibility mode on Windows XP, Vista and 7 (this made me get another error on Origin, where it asked me to upgrade to Windows 8 or newer...)
  • Deleted groups.cache
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled the game 2 times

Am I missing another solution? Is there anything else I could try? Please be advised that I will not be downloading any third party software like the famous 4 GB patch or whatever.

By the way, my computer is not really a gaming one. It is just a stock Toshiba. However, one would think an almost 16 year old game would run just fine. I would appreciate any kind of help based on my description. Should you have any questions in order to better troubleshoot, please let me know.

  • @eduardojavier96 , first of all the 4GB patch is not necessary for Sims 2 UC since the game runs off of Origin and all patches are automatically installed when you install the game. You do need to download and use the Graphics Rule Maker to insure that the game recognizes your graphics card. Because it is an older game, Sims 2 does not recognize many of the newer graphics cards. I hate to tell you but in order to play this game, your graphics card needs to be added. For additional instructions or if you wish to manually add your graphic card, visit Leefish's forum for instructions on how to do this. You can Google search for the forum link.

The only other thing I can think of is if you play with CC or mods and one of them is outdated or conflicting with game protocols. Please let me know if you do and I will give you instructions on how to reset the game to a vanilla state.
