The Sims 2: Unspecificed Error

Hi! Any help would be majorly appreciated at the moment!

I've recently managed to install The Sims 2 base game (4 disk cd version) onto my computer (had issues previously due to bitdefender - majority of sims files empty, no SC4 terrains, no neighbourhoods etc - but I've allowed the applications access, uninstalled, reinstalled and its fine now). The game launched completely fine, no lag in the start up animations, it took me to the neighbourhood screen where thankfully the pre-made neighbourhoods were, clicked onto pleasantview and it loaded to the world and then crashed (which I completely expected, didn't think it would be an easy time getting it to work) and I've attempted to launch the game since but I only get a message saying 'Unspecified Error' and so I can't launch the game. When I've looked up about a 4gb patch etc it says to check your config logs first in the logs folder in the sims 2, but mine is empty so I'm wondering if that's the issue?

I haven't attempted adding any patches, changing registry stuff etc because I'm worried about messing up the laptop because I had this issue 5 years ago when I tried playing The Sims 2 and I tried running as administrator and it completely messed up the game so I don't want to have that issue again.

So sorry for how long this message is but it's driving me crazy now!! I'm on an 8 year old Toshiba laptop with Windows 10 on it.

  • @katiemac1234 , the files should all have some kind of data in them and if they don't it's not a problem to attempt to correct that. So, now to answer your questions/address your problems.

In regards to the 4GB patch, there are several YouTube videos that show step by step what you need to do to patch the game. I simply looked up "Sims 2 patch 4GB" in Google and it showed the video which is about 15 or so minutes long. I would watch it through first to get an idea of what you need to do and then start and stop it as many times as you need to apply the information as needed.

Next, have you downloaded and used Graphics Rule Maker? What this does is add your Graphics card information to the Graphics Rule.sgr file so the game will recognize your graphics card. Any questions regarding Graphics Rule Maker should be directed to Leefish's forums. (Google search to find the link to the forums). This will also smooth out the performance of the game and prevent DirectX 9.0 errors.

And lastly to return the game to a vanilla state, you move the Sims 2 folder (found Documents > EA Games > Sims 2) to your Desktop. Do not copy and paste or create a shortcut. Actually move the folder. Start up the game and allow for a new folder to generate. This will have all the neighborhoods back to the blank state with no saved games or CC/Mods present.

    Please keep me updated.
