Visual allows you to type in directly. It shows pretty closely the way it will look when you view it through the blog.
HTML allows you to enter HTML code.
Try typing some text in Visual, then switch to HTML View to see what the code behind the visual display looks like.
Also: IMPORTANT TIP! Save often.
At the bottom of the page, you'll find Preview, Save, and Publish buttons. Click Save often so you don't accidentally lose your work.
On my computer, I notice that the locations of the Save and Publish buttons sometimes switch! (That's annoying!) So I always need to remember to read the button, rather than just click the location where I think the Save button will be.
