Can't clear rubbish for the Back To The Wall quest

I just got to the quest and now I can't progress through because of some dumb glitch preventing my sims to clear the rubbish. There's nothing blocking them, I tried kicking the rubbish to open up all...

When ever I try to pick up rubbish after having a tantrum nothing happens. Is there something I'm missing
