That is strange, you should clear those items in the tutorial, have you done the tutorial when you started the game?

I did go through the tutorial (I don't think it's possible to not do it), but due to me not playing it for quite some time as well as the changing of phones, it was like this when I logged in. I suspect it might be a bug or glitch. Thankfully my account has not progressed far so I don't have much of an attachment towards it, so I've restarted my account and am now playing it from the beginning. It's unfortunate though, that 2 of my sims generation is gone forever. :'(
Yes it is unfortunate! Some continue playing anyhow, the game will run, but just not that great.
You could opt to contact EA and see if they can do something about it, but it seems to be a really annoying bug.
