I'm not sure about it saving much as they are virtual servers, but I agree with you about a definite closing of old worlds. It seems odd to me that worlds are kept open 'forever' even when the number logging in is a tiny proportion of those originally on the world.
Prime examples for closure, to me, are the old style worlds (CB1/2, 1-108) and the country/language specific ones, the Vet servers and the 'World Championship' servers. As one is introduced of the Vet and WC types, the oldest should be closed.
Yes, some have resources and caps they have bought, but it will be very few. Some way of transferring them from the old world to a setting for a new version must be possible to be found as the resources are in a database and not directly connected to EA's funding system.
