Bad-looking textures, editing "config.cfg" won't work

Since one of the last updates Titanfall 2 refuses to use decent-quality textures. The options to change their quality isn't grayed out, but any setting just won't work.

This issue has been answered multiple times, apparently the solution is to add the line gpu_vram_size_mb "1800" in the Documents/[...]/config.cfg file, and eventually marking it as read-only; However it won't work for me. I have tried the following lines:

gpu_vram_size_mb "2048"

"gpu_vram_size_mb" "2048"

"setting.gpu_vram_size_mb" "2048"

gpu_vram_size_mb  "1800"

gpu_vram_size_mb  1800

I doubt including or excluding the quotes is necessary, but I'm really desperate here; also why not?

I've also tried:

  • Changing and changing back the texture quality setting, eventually restarting TF2;
  • Toying around with other settings (AA, fullscreen, resolution, texture filtering);
  • Deleting config.cfg;
  • Not marking config.cfg as read-only;
  • (Indirectly) Restarting my computer;
  • Throwing my monitor out of the window after foolishly trying to use a sniper rifle with a Minecraft-like scope texture.

I have ~4000MiB of VRAM available overall, and I've been able to run Very High quality textures while I was allowed to. I attached my DxDiag.txt to the post.

Thanks in advance for any answer.

EDIT: The last workaround I tried to follow was nearly identical this one: http://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues/Texture-in-game-were-ridiculously-bad (thanks @EA_Archi for the link)
