Beta is not a panacea. Hardware fails, code breaks. It's all apart of the break in process of everything that is new. Beta is not the same as say a shakedown cruise. Finding faults and flaws (especially in hardware) works best at full throttle, not small scale testing like a beta.

From my experience it looks like the 503 error is the authenticating servers failing. Which is a pretty common issue with new releases and is the hardest to properly test.
