I have checked both and neither has the trial listed. Could it be because the full game is using the same files as the trial, but have different ID's so it treats the updates as separate games, causing it to update twice?

I'm not sure that the full game is using the same files from Trial version since both games are installed in different folders on your PC.
Can you please try to clear origin cache https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/origin/origin/origin-my-games-list-is-blank/ ? This can be a possible solution.
