Titanfall 2 game stutters and crashes when CrossFire is enabled R9 Fury X

Hello,

I recently purchased TitanFall 2, but I'm having trouble playing the game in campaign mode - haven't gotten to multiplayer yet due to the performance/stability issues that I've encountered when AMD CrossFire is enabled. With CrossFire enabled, the game starts and the campaign will load/resume, but performance rapidly degrades and after a couple minutes of game-play, the stutter will continue to get worse until Windows 10 displays a pop-up message saying:

"Close programs to prevent information loss" Your computer is low on memory. Save your file and close these programs "TitanFall 2".

If I ignore the message, the PC will reboot within a few seconds. Selecting close will return to Windows with a black screen. I have tried disabling TAA and reverting to previous AMD driver versions including from 16.12.1 to 16.10.x - there does not seem to be CrossFire support at all for the TitanFall 2 prior to 16.11.3. I also tried reducing the texture quality from very high, to high, and finally to medium, but there was almost no difference in the stutter or the time before the game crash. Is there another work-around for this issue? Disabling CrossFire did allow the game to run, but the performance was not very impressive at 4K and most of the settings graphics have to be reduced to make it playable on a single GPU.

I have 4 R9 Fury X cards in quad-fire and an i7 5960X CPU.

Thanks.

  • As an update to this issue, I was able to get CrossFire to work with two cards enabled for about 2 hours with the Insane texture settings before the game crashed. Three cards runs briefly before stuttering. 4 cards enabled results in nearly immediate stuttering that progressively gets worse after 2-3 minutes followed with the Windows notification regarding memory usage Oddly enough, the Windows memory error seems to be fairly generic and would suggest that the PC is out of memory rather than the GPU(s). The insane texture settings didn't seem to slow the game down (FPS >130-140FPS) with 16X Antistropic filter and 4x MSAA with V-SYNC disabled. Very-High settings will probably resolve the memory issue with only 2 cards enabled.

    Right Click - AMD Settings -> About - "Radeon Additional Settings" -> CrossFire settings -> CrossFire 2 GPUS 0+6, 0+8, 0+4, 0+10, etc...

    Unfortunately there's no way to edit the TitanFall profile to perform the switch from CrossFire mode with 2 GPUS enabled when launching the game so this has to be done manually. Both BF3 and BF4 have no problems with 4 cards enabled. Going to experiment with their profiles later.
