Titanfall 2 sees my windows audio settings as 7.1 system

So, I bought the game but this bug with audio settings makes the game unplayable for me. I've already searched the forums, and didn't find a suitable solution anywhere.

The issue is: the game sees my audio output as 7.1 system and doesn't allow me to change it. However, I don't have, and never had 7.1 system. Whenever I try to tweak Windows audio settings in the sound mixer, it only sees my output as a Stereo system, as it  is. Therefore, there is no way I can change windows audio settings and make the game playable, as the settings are non-existent.

Because the game treats my audio output as 7.1 system, I don't hear half of the sounds in the game, and the other half has horrible distortions.

Already tried lowering discretion rate - didn't change a thing.

FYI, I use MSI GE62VR laptop.

Any help will be highly appreciated, as I don't want to refund the game, but will have no other option with this problem.

Thanks in advance!

@a-karpen Are u check setting in that file?

Also, u should exit from Nahimic before run game (this software have conflict with the some games).

    Hello @a-karpen

Have you tried to use some simple headset with the game, connected directly to your PC? How many monitors are connected to your PC? Does any of them connected with HDMI? What is your current sound output system?

  • @a-karpen Go to C:\Users\[UserName]\Documents\Respawn\Titanfall2\local\settings.cfg and check setting line ("2" - for headphones or stereo)

    sound_num_speakers "2"

    Hi, thanks for the answer.

I use simple headphones connected straight to 3.5mm jack and no other monitors are attached to the laptop. Sound output goes through Realtek drivers and Nahimic software.

@MADrag0n Yes, I checked the file, the parameter was set as you wrote earlier.

Turning off Nahimic did help by the way, the lags dissapeared. Thank you!

My Titanlfall 2 audio settings also showed 7.1 and unable to change them in-game, even though I have stereo speakers set as default device in the PC sound settings.( I do have a HDMI monitor connected to my laptop but it is not set as the default audio device and my system can output 7.1 over hdmi).

    .

I looked into this settings file you directed the OP to it already was set to "2".  I changed the value to "1" and then sound worked again.  Titanfall 2 audio settings in-game still say 7.1 with no option to change it in-game.

Anyway don't know what "1" means but at least I can play the game. Sound worked when I first installed the game but the second time I started the game it was not working. Thanks for the info.

Well that didn't last long, the update that installed today killed the sound again and I lost all progress as it overwrote my only saved game file. Changing the setting file - sound_num_speakers "2" value now does nothing.  Pretty poor update system that destroys your sav file in the my document folder!!

  • Hello,

I am currently running TF2, and for some reason I set the sound_num_speakers to 6 and when running the game through Steam it still shows 7.1 as the Windows Audio Configuration. Now the workaround this was to put the command line prompt as -channels 6 which forces the audio to 5.1. But I do not want to do that in my game launch options in Steam.

I am using a different command line to uncap better FPS in game with the following setting:

    +fps_max unlimited -high -novid -highspec

The main reason is not the FPS in which I can use the command line above in the game launch options on Steam. The main problem is getting the audio to be forced to 5.1. I want to change that in the settings.cfg for TF2. Do not want to put the -channels 6 in the game launch options.

    How can this be resolved?

  • for anyone still looking, I read on another forum that you can very simply add -channels 2 in either origin/EA or steam launch options, which instantly worked for me 🙂
