i make sure to remove fences behind buildings / trees (can look ugly in winter when the leaves fall), remove any hidden bonus items (training walls), remove bridges (unless this changed, they count as an item), space out any trees in your forest area, limit any duplicate buildings (SF heights), and try and create areas that incorporate more than one building to cut down on overly decorated areas.
