I'm with you HATE THAT. Actually re-reading your post - I have to say: You're alone :D I don't find it slightly annoying - I find it extremely annoying.

Don't think so they are the towers that go on the sides of the walls. There is usually only one keep which sometimes can be within another wall inside for extra protection, but it was the last stronghold.

I'm talking about what the OP is calling a "castle". Agreed there is only one keep per castle, but we have three castles in this game, and hence three keeps. We also have towers, and walls, and a gate for each castle.
