The incentive (if you can call it that) is that fewer and fewer buildings that pay out are given away for free or earned on a prize track anymore (just look at this event's free building to donut building ratio). The further along in the game you get the more lopsided it becomes. Eventually, if you wish to continue the town-building aspect of the game in earnest, premium buildings will become your primary avenue of addition. So really, no incentive is necessary because sooner or later it will be all there is.
You may have a point, though I can't say that I've examined the numbers from all recent events enough to say. I'm still far more inclined to purchase character/building combos, though, and I think there might be a significant number of other people who hold that same preference. Just wondering what the numbers are of people buying the solo buildings, and whether that might not be increased if something were added.
Okay, well to answer your question, I just buy what I like and/or what seems the most advantageous. Usually it's something with a multiplier, so my preference leans toward neither building or combo. As for the stand-alone buildings, payout differences of buildings don't mean a lot to me. I focus on how well it would fit in my town, who has a job there and its length, and what the building's animation is.
