Just of of curiosity, what do Americans think of us Aussies? Because in all the movies when there is an Australian, they have such a strong accent that doesn't even sound like us! Also about 10 years ago, I had a nanny come from Texas, we picked her up from the airport, and when we got home the first thing she asked was 'where are the kangaroos??' Expecting to see them in the backyard! I don know if its the same these days, but I get the feeling you guys think we're all from the outback! I'm guessing because in the movies they're always the stereotypical country Aussie :)
G'day mate! Crickey! Shrimp on the barbie (we don't even call it shrimp, they're prawns) Etc etc :P emmcee1 wrote:

Australia's is cool * you guys have your own Continent! USA does not have that an Australia is our friends you never screwed us!
I saw an awesome documentary about Peter Norman was really quite a great Australian I believe! The government should of honored him more when the Olympics were there- Salute. It's on net flics
John Carlos
There's no-one in the nation of Australia that should be honoured, recognised, appreciated more than Peter Norman for his humanitarian concerns, his character, his strength and his willingness to be a sacrificial lamb for justice. potatocato wrote:

I think it depends on how and how much they're exposed to Australia and Australians. Some people are more cosmopolitan so they've either traveled or they live in cities or went to universities where they've bumped into one or two Australians at least while others basically just have the Australia tourism commercials and Crocodile Dundee movies to rely on for 'knowledge.' As with any ethnicity, country, race, religion, etc., if your knowledge of them comes solely from movies and television shows then you better question what you know and go read a reputable history book or ask someone who could actually inform you (in a respectful and sensitive way, of course.)
I forgot to add that the "shrimp on the barbie" thing is from a tourism commercial that Paul Hogan participated in. You can blame him for that. Well, I'm sure he didn't write it but he did participate in it. Also, the stupid Foster's beer commercials "Fosters: Australian for Beer" (no real Australian would ever drink)nancalmei wrote:

I'm from Canada and I never knew what Australians called their day of remembrance or when it was but I assumed they had one. Ours is called Remembrance Day it's on Nov. 11th at 11:00am and we remember our soldiers and every soldier that died in that war specifically but it's also for remembering all soldiers in all wars from all countries who gave their lives. We do it on Nov. 11th at 11:00am because that's officially when the war was over. Thank you for posting about Anzac Day.
Lest we forget.
We have Remembrance Day in Australia, too. At the same time, too. :) mwdalton wrote:

I've never heard of it. Damn my American education.
I'll be visiting Wikipedia shortly to learn more about it.
Don't blame your American education, perhaps you didn't listen well in class. Australia is one of our closest and most dear allies, having fought with us hand in hand in every single major battle since WWII.
As an American, I hold Australia and all of her people quite dear.Waterboyeee wrote:

Or maybe I wasn't taught about it in class. Like I've already said. Perhaps you should troll someone else with your ignorant comments and don't try and tell me what I was or wasn't taught in school.
