Yeah, getting those tightened will hurt every time, and you'll be unable to bite for at least a day.
I didn't just have braces- I had an expansion retainer first:

which actually widens your mouth by turning a "key" in the middle that makes the whole contraption wider. Imagine how much that hurts. Then I had four teeth pulled, two baby and two permanent.
