I think everything is actually OK for you. When you fight him at the campfire with the 4 kids, each does 1-2 damage, or more if you have premium skins. Once the monster is defeated, he goes back to his sunken tower and recharges for 12 hours. You then tap him a bunch of times at the tower and he goes back to the campfire and you repeat the whole process, earning precious candy apples through the process. Just keep an eye on your apple count and make sure it's going up through the whole process. There are other threads that indicate how many candy apples you need to be getting - something like 700 a day will get you the final prize, I believe.
