Fair Warning long Read Ahead (no TL/DR)
I lay in bed pondering how to eloquently explain my position, yet while some understand....they don't quite..... understand.
Listen, if I could sell my account to EA for half of what I spent on the game I wouldn't exactly get chump change.... Not bragging as it is an issue, one that they themselves have solved rather quickly with this event.
I've invested.
I feel....less obligation and moreso something earned or deserved, in the end I paid for it
I used that example once, for Lil Lisa's recycling plant.
See back in the day, after the Monorail event, the building generated cash.
During the event, and a couple of months after, the building generated blue prints.
The general idea was anyone who purchased it during the event, more than likely made up for it's cost within that year, some from the bonuts round and later on due to the weekly Monorail tasks.
However some people refused the logic of:
"It will pay for itself in a year"
Instead saying: I'd rather wait till it's cheaper.
So we asked
"But what if it isn't cheaper for another two years? Wouldn't you have made the donuts back and more during that time?"
Sure, but I don't want to pay that much for it
I don't recall what happened next.
I understand the idea of the factory generating donuts all this time.
Fun fact though:
I don't care about the DONUTS
I DO, but not in that way.
For me it was a UNIQUE ITEM THAT COULD ONLY BE OBTAINED BY PONYING UP SOME REAL CASH. For lack of a better term.
Forgive me if that was too blunt.
A day ago I spent an hour and a half farmkng for 600 Donuts using trucks, the Bart Screen hit a couple times and things lagged a bit still....it was a decent harvest.
Donuts are of no concern.
The rarity applied to the item is.
But someone else having that item doesn't affect your town!
True, true.....very true
Yet I ask, did they pay for it?
Then why should I?
Why did I?
We go back to the illusion of exclusivity, had they been changed to only generate CASH and not DONUTS, heck I'd be checking to see if I could get another factory for my town!
Yet it's the exact same item, no duplicate can be had, and.... I was a sucker for paying for it.
I won't deny it.
So, forgive me if the salt I feel somehow rubs on this wound I have, I can't help but feel like people don't really mind these things as long as the game keeps kicking.
I played another game.
Once a year they'd release a calendar, buy it and you'd receive an item virtually into your account.
Now it didn't take long for people to realize that they would release a new calendar each year, and with each new year a new item released.
People offered to pay double, triple heck far more than what the calendar was worth for the OLD VIRTUAL ITEMS, not the physical calendar just an old virtual item.
However the Game Devs and team believed it would go against the exclusivity, against the design.
The calendar would be released for one year, you had until new years day to buy that calendar, then, once it's gone...it's gone.
They did eventually release a couple more of the old calendars (and virtual items came with the calendar) BUT AS A REWARD FOR A CARD TOURNAMENT.
One of the winners sold their calendar for about $150-$200 in cash almost immediately after obtaining it.
The calendar was worth what...$15-$20 when it was first released?
I really appreciated those devs and that whole gaming company.
They release good content and do their best not to screw the player, however they spread themselves too thin ending up kinda screwing small playerbases of their least popular games.
Listen, I don't care about the donuts, I care about the item that came with it
Every now and then I'll see that in real life as well, mostly with DVDs.
They recently released a special box set of Back To the Future the Trilogy, with some really interesting bonuses.... I do feel interested but if I bought it, it wouldn't be for the DVD, I already have an anniversary Edition, I have a digital copy, heck I even have the Boxed VHS set.... I wouldn't buy it for the movie..... But what came along with it.
Now imagine if everyone was allowed to send a letter to that film company, and they would receive one of those items randomly from the box set, no DVD included.
Wouldn't someone who bought that set get mad?
Wouldn't they question why the heck they bought it in the first place?
I like collecting things, the rarer the better...perhaps it's a collectors mind in action that makes me think this way.....
I'm not leaving, but a bitter aftertaste remains.
Nevertheless I still feel....cheated.
The only items that I don't believe have been released for donuts are those items bundled with donut purchases from the Lemon of Troy episode.....
They could release a new feature, exclusive for people who pay....and I won't spend a dime. Permanently keep your springfield!
I still won't spend.
If anyone wants to spend money on the game, go ahead please do, if it makes you happy that's great, but if anyone asks, should I spend money on this game, my answer will always be: No, from now on.
Besides, these last few months I've spent the money elsewhere, I've been spending more of it on buying movies digitally to watch with my girlfriend on movie night.
I am Bummed EA did this, but on the bright side I'll be able to spend money on someone and something that really matters, and makes me happy.
Hopefully this explains my point of view a little better, I doubt it will at this point, but it's an attempt.

@someonewashere - EA will rightly say you bought a bundle of donuts and got the item in question for free - they didn't change the price for the donuts on offer after all, and perhaps ( but I'm not sure ) also included more donuts than usual as an added bonus.
EDIT - you've also had the donuts being generated for a lot longer in your game.

If I’d paid £100 for those two a while back, I’d be really upset.

Early adoption. You had a cool item for two years before any of us plebs got a shot at it. But I can understand the salt, especially given the coin.
