I sympathise with you as i've spent almost 8 months saving up 80 donuts to get the Aztec Theatre, it'll probably take me another 8 months to save up for the next premium item i want, just keep tapping...

Probably farming the bonus levels. When you are level 38, you can win 1-3 donuts for the bonus level. The bonus level is completed by earning thousands/millions of XP. This can be achieved by purchasing items that give a good ratio of xp per game dollar spent. People that had a lot of time on their hands determined the best items are the Volley ball court and the weather station. You simply use your excess cash to buy as many as possible, then sell them back, and repeat until you complete the bonus level. Then repeat for the following bonus level, etc.
Prior to Halloween, the bonus levels were locked at a set amount of XP. Since Halloween, each bonus level increases in XP so this trick is getting harder and harder to do to hit that amount in between level updates.
