Without spending donuts?

The only way is to enter the game as much as possible and clear the tanned man.
Make sure you play the scan game every 4 hours.
Visit your neighbours every day.
Make sure you have active neighbours that visit you too (even if it's small numbers it still adds).

In my opinion if you're just one day behind you should be able to catch up.
