This may be a dialect issue. In America "to bankrupt" means to spend all your currency, real or imaginary, that you currently hold.
"I was going to spend the evening playing cards but I bankrupted on the second hand so I just came home." Now obviously I didn't hire a lawyer and declare bankruptcy in court, sell my home and car, etc. I just ran out of money in the game.
