I don't normally like making posts like this but...
My theory is that they've been quietly retired. They are almost redundant due to high amount of complex content we now get.

I imagine that, in terms of a revenue source, the mini-events are much greater than the level updates. People are much more inclined to buy limited time stuff, and so not too shocked to see more development time directed there.
