I am not overly bothered by the wheel, but in the above situation I gave, yes I would prefer the boss just didnt give me a bonus rather than a $1 bonus.
Not that exact situation, but one year an old boss instead of giving a christmas bonus just sent a Happy Christmas generic email to everyone. Believe me, most of us would have prefered nothing rather than an email. The email felt like an insult, whereas nothing probably would have only made me feel "Oh well, no bonus this year then" I certainly would have forgotten it by now.
