All the gun stuff is just in character with the one-armed guy (can't remember his name) and spiced with a dash of the usual over-the-topness of the Simpsons we know and love.

Well said. I think some people just look for reasons to take offense when something doesn't fit their specific political, religious, or moral agenda. Which is too bad, as that approach to life invariably limits your outlook.
