# for me would denote number, although I never use it as such, would always use No. to abreviate number. Also used to use it to denote hexadecimal in the early days of computing but havent seen it used as such for a while. The only other term I have heard for it is square sign, apparently it was used in telecommunications, but when I first heard it on a recorded phoneline I had no idea what they were refering to.
