Example. Doors and canons start t at 10 bells, where everything else starts out at 5. Both decrees per action. I have 100 friends. So I'm getting double bells for 80 towns rather than lesser amount for 40 towns, plus your neighbor gets bells for clearing those items. But yeah at some point it's all cash.

This is kinda like lodge tapping, but here it's encouraged and not parasitic in any way.

If a neighbor taps the tunnel or cannon, you get bells. Otherwise, you don't get anything.

Thus, it appears that it's actually a good thing for a neighbor to come by and only tap your tunnel / cannon when they're free--even if that means only 1-2 taps a day.

Hmmmm, I just got my cannon installed by Frink's lab. Guess I'll need to move something.
